When telling a story, various markers are used to indicate time.
Al principio, primero, lo primero se usa al comienzo de la historia.

Luego and después are used to indicate that what you’re about to say happened after what you have already related.
- Después se ha puesto a estudiar toda la información encontrada.
En un momento dado is used to refer to an unspecified moment in a story.

De repente (suddenly) is synonymous with inesperadamente, súbitamente.

Al final indicates that the story is ending.
- Al final ha logrado hacer un informe muy bueno.

These words and expressions are only used in colloquial speech, but without them conversation sounds artificial.
Bueno signals the beginning of a story or participation in a conversation.
A ver indicates that the speaker is prepared to listen to an explanation or story.
Qué bien; signals that we consider what was said to be positive.
Pues eso, y nada más, and bueno… signal the end of a story or intervention.
Bueno, pues nada signals the end of a conversation and a desire to continue on one’s way.
